Get Skinny with Sugar-Free Popsicles: How to select and/or make them

Get Skinny with Sugar-Free Popsicles: How to select and/or make them

The very best popsicles are the ones you make yourself because then you have 100% control over the ingredients.  Popsicles are fast, easy and inexpensive to make, and a really delicious home-made fruity yogurt popsicle recipe is provided at the end of this article.

The popsicles you buy in your grocery store are a kind of highly processed food, and reliance on processed rather than whole, natural foods is what gets us into weight trouble. For example, the typical popsicle ingredients list includes lots of hard-to-pronounce chemicals.  This is okay occasionally and in small doses, but mostly you want to avoid having too many highly processed foods with chemicals and other substances added to them. That said, we all have the need for off-the-shelf snacks once in a while, and the purpose of this article is to help you sort out the best, most readily available popsicle choices.

There are lots of low-fat/low-calorie popsicles products, but beware because the majority of these popsicles are sweetened with sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup.  Even a little bit of sugar can trigger food cravings, turn you into a crazy person with food, and lead to a binge.  For example, eating just one seemingly harmless popsicle made with sugar can turn into an out-of-control eating episode where you end up eating the whole box and more.  So definitely pass on any popsicle made with sugar, no matter how tempting it might be to induldge in low-calorie or low-fat choice.

Instead, always look for the phrase “no sugar added” on the popsicle product cover.  Many popsicle manufacturers have two variations of the same product — one that’s made with caloric sweeteners and one that isn’t.  This is why you shouldn’t make a decision based on brand name alone.  Always take the time to look for the sugar-free product. The next thing you want to do is take a scan of the ingredients list to see what substance or substances are used to artificially sweeten the product.  My personal preference is to seek out the ones made with sucralose (splenda) and to avoid the ones made with aspartame. In my opinion, the splenda product is a less objectionable choice because there are less unwanted side-effect problems assocated with it — especially for kids who are getting a lot of aspartame in other diet products or diet drinks.

My two “faves” are Klondike and Edy’s, but I wouldn’t rule out the Fudgsicle/Popsicle products, which are both made with aspartame, if that’s all you can find.

1. Klondike Slima-a-Bear 100 Calorie Bars – NO SUGAR ADDED (sweetened with sucralose)
2.Edy’s NO SUGAR ADDED Fruit bars (sweetened with sucralose).
3. Fudgsicle NO SUGAR ADDED (sweetened with aspartame)
4. SUGAR FREE Popsicle (sweetened with aspartame)

Karen Bentley’s Recipe for Fruity Yogurt Pops
(From the Sugar-Free Miracle Diet Cookbook – Snack Collection)

Serves:  8

Ingredients:
2 cups plain, sugar-free Greek yogurt (low-fat is okay, but be sure there’s no sugar in it.  Most low-fat products are made with caloric sweeteners.)
2 cups frozen berries (mixed or dark berries are best because they have the most flavor)
1/2 cup sucralose (Splenda) or non-caloric sweetener of your choice
2 teaspoons sugar-free vanilla

Directions:
Get your popsicle molds and sticks ready.  Or, alternatively, use 8 four-ounce paper cups as molds with large toothpicks.  Put the frozen fruit and sucralose in a food processor and process for 1 or 2 minutes until the berries have a granular consistency.  Stop the processor.  Add vanilla and yogurt.  Process again until a smooth and creamy consistency is achieved, about 1 minute.  Pour into popsicle molds.  Freeze.  Eat.  Enjoy.

March 27th, 2009 at 12:24pm Under Summer

Question by daisyyyyyy: I am booking a vacation at the sandals in the bahamas, but a new sandals has opened up called Emerald bay?

I’m really confused. I don’t know if I should book at the Sandals Royal Bahamian or the Emerald Bay. There is not much information or pictures of the emerald bay.

Thoughts?

Best answer:

Answer by AJ
Out of the ordinary luxury comes to the Bahamian out islands with the introduction of the world’s first all butler, all oceanfront resort, Sandals Emerald Bay, Great Exuma. Born with a legacy and transformed into a legend, this former Four Seasons resort with its rich history of refined panache, is now part of the legendary Sandals Luxury Included® brand. Civilized pleasures go hand in hand with exotic adventures along a mile-long crescent shaped beach. Highlights include a par 72 Greg Norman designed golf course, a 16,000 sq. ft. spa, a deepwater marina and five superb restaurants. Sandals Emerald Bay is your own exotic private escape, so easy to get to…so close to home.

That means Emerald Bay is going to be extremely expensive.

Picking Out the Best Sandal for Your Child

Picking Out the Best Sandal for Your Child

Choosing a pair of sandals for your children can be a difficult process.  Without considering issues such as growing room or foot support, you could end up buying sandals that are bad for your child’s feet.

Growing Room

Make sure that there is a bit of room between the heel and the back of the sandal, and likewise between the little toe and the outside of the sandal.  This will not only assure that your child’s sandals are safe, but there is a little growing room.  Recheck the fit of the sandal after about two months, especially if you know that your child is going through a growth spurt.

Children’s Foot Myths

You’ve probably read somewhere that you need to make sure that your child is getting off to the right start with good arch support.  If they are under seven years of age, they do not need arch support.  If they are over seven, you may want to start looking for a sandal with a bit of arch support.

Sandals have gotten a bit of bad press with parents who are led to believe that they let the feet “spread”.   This is simply not the case – they are in fact better for a child’s feet as they do not constrain the toes and feet, and therefore will not misshape the feet later in life.

Safety First

As a parent, the first thing on your mind is safety.  The first piece of insurance against falls and scrapes is to follow the advice above and purchase a sandal with a good fit.  Sandals with closed backs and/or back straps are best to guarantee no missteps, and wide straps guarantee that the sandal will last as long as your child’s feet are that size.

You should also ensure that the sandal isn’t loose-fitting – this will make it difficult for your child to walk in them.  Straps should be tight but not so much that your child’s foot bulges out of them.

Economy

Until your child reaches around seven, they will go through a great number of shoes.  If you find a good deal online, buy the sandal in a few sizes to account for growth; they certainly won’t be getting any cheaper, and it will be brand new if it hasn’t been taken out of the box for a year.  Make sure when you are pinching pennies that you are not sacrificing quality and fit – shopping online guarantees that you do not have to do this.

Go to a higher end shoe store for children, and take note of the brands that you like the fit of – then go online and buy them.

Breaking Them In

Have your child wear the sandals around the house with socks; this will keep them from getting blisters from the straps.

What To Stay Away From?

Synthetic soles are good for the beach, but that is it.  Plastics will make your child’s feet sweat and make it unsafe for them to walk.  Stick with a leather, cloth, or suede sole for the best results.

If your child is under the age of six, avoid decorative trim that may cause a choking hazard, no matter how cute it looks.

I Want To Go Green

Since your little tyke will be going through a lot of sandals, chances are good that you want to minimize those little footprints on the earth.  If this is the case, steer clear of synthetics and go for sandals made of natural materials such as cork, leather, and suede.  These are biodegradable.  Also check out where they are made – the closer to the USA they are made the more eco-friendly they are.  Taiwan, for example, is closer to the US than China, as is Vietnam.  Sandals made in these countries are still coming a long way, but they aren’t burning as much fossil fuel on the way.

Save money by shopping for affordable sandals online. Browse the hottest brands including Bongo sandals. Also shop online for grey dress sandals.
