I’ve read a lot of reviews, some good, some bad. I think some people have this idea that the product will speed everything up all the time, and this sets bad expectations. What this drive will do is cache often used data, such as core Operating System files used at boot and commonly used applications, and store that data in its 4GB SSD-like cache. If your drive already reads and writes pretty fast, in the neighborhood of 75-100MBps (megaBytes not bits), other than boot up and application loading, you aren’t going to notice much of a difference.
I use Apple’s OS X Snow Leopard, and it definitely boots faster (1 minute 30 seconds prior to this disk, now 55 seconds from power on to ready + all my startup apps running), and commonly run applications also start up noticeably faster.
I upgraded from a bit slower drive, so I see some performance gain there, but nothing huge.
Overall I got the disk read speeds I was looking for — faster boot, faster common app loading, and an overall boost in performance by upgrading from a slower drive altogether.
This drive won’t change your life, unless you are booting several times a day or loading the same data repeatedly. It’s a fine drive with the benefit of faster boot and common app loading times, nothing more.

I did not purchase this drive from Amazon, but I would have if it had been in stock. I installed this 500 GB drive into a relatively new HP laptop computer that came with Windows 7 OS and cost more than $1000. I wrote down the Windows Experience Numbers with the original Fujitsu 5400 RPM hard drive prior to making the swap. Also, I measured the power up and power down times for comparison. I used Acronis Easy Migrate to clone the Seagate Hybrid drive. Before cloning the hard drive, I cleaned the registry and triple defragmented the hard drive to make sure everything was optimized. The system powered up perfectly after swapping the hard drives. I powered up and down several times to give the SSD portion of the hard drive a chance to learn from my usage. I expected Windows 7 to power up faster because my old drive was 5400 RPM and the new one is 7200 RPM. To my surprise, the boot up time was exactly the same as with the 5400 RPM drive! I tested it several more times just to be certain and it was consistent. Well, that was disappointing. So, I reran the Windows Experience test to determine if that was any better. I got the exact same numbers as with the 5400 RPM drive. I double checked to make sure the Seagate drive model number was correct and it was. So theoretically, I do have the correct disk drive in my laptop computer. I cleaned the registry again and I defragmented again. No change in performance.
I am a fairly accomplished electrical engineer and I build my own high end overclocked Intel i7 systems, so I think I know what I am doing. I checked back over at Newegg’s reviews and some people had the same experience as I did. And then there are others who say they are getting fantastic improvements. I don’t get it. It is as if my Seagate Hybrid drive’s SSD section isn’t working. I do not know how to test the SSD section since it is buried inside the drive. At least my hybrid drive is very quiet and doesn’t vibrate like several people experienced on Newegg. The only parameter that is faster with this new Seagate Hybrid SSD drive is the power down time. Power down is about 15 seconds faster. So at least something is faster.
There was no documentation or installation disk of any kind accompanying this disk drive. I opened the box and there was only the disk drive in an antistatic bag and nothing else. Of course, now Amazon apparently has this disk drive in stock. I am tempted to buy another one from Amazon to see if there is any difference. I have considered returning my hybrid drive to Newegg, but I cannot prove it is defective. After all, it does work — just no better than my 5400 RPM Fujitsu OEM disk drive. I am clearly disappointed with this disk drive.
